Puppy Health Checklist: 3 Things You Must Get Right in the First Year

Bringing home a puppy is pure joy. It's a whirlwind of fluffy paws, needle-sharp teeth, and endless photo opportunities. But beneath the chaos lies a quiet responsibility: the choices you make in this first year will echo for the rest of their life.

Table of Contents

  1. Checklist #1: Build a Better Brain (DHA)
  2. Checklist #2: Build Stronger Bones (Calcium)
  3. Checklist #3: Build a Resilient Gut (Immunity)

Checklist #1: Build a Better Brain (DHA)

From 8 weeks to 1 year, your puppy's brain is a super-computer under construction. Trainability, memory, and even mood are all being hard-wired right now.

The single most important "building block" for this process is an Omega-3 fatty acid called DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). It is the primary structural fat in the brain and central nervous system.

A landmark study showed that puppies fed a diet enriched with DHA were significantly easier to train and performed better in cognitive tests than those without. You are literally building a smarter, more trainable dog.

How to get it: While fish oil is common, Antarctic Krill Meal is a superior source. Its DHA is bound to phospholipids, making it more easily absorbed by your puppy's developing brain cells.

Checklist #2: Build Stronger Bones (Calcium)

A large breed puppy can grow from 1kg to 60kg in a single year. This explosive growth puts immense strain on their developing skeleton. Getting the calcium balance right is not just important; it's critical.

  • Too little calcium: Leads to weak, brittle bones.
  • Too much calcium (or the wrong kind): Can accelerate growth too quickly, leading to joint problems like hip dysplasia.

This is especially vital for owners feeding raw or home-cooked diets, which are naturally low in calcium. You MUST supplement, but wisely.

How to get it: Forget dense, rock-based calcium. A bioavailable, plant-based source like Algae Calcium provides a 'slow and steady' release of minerals that supports even, correct bone development without shocking the system.

Checklist #3: Build a Resilient Gut (Immunity)

A puppy is born with a sterile, naive gut. For the first few months, their immune system is in "bootcamp", learning what is a friend (food) and what is a foe (harmful bacteria).

This process can be messy, often resulting in bouts of loose stools or digestive upset as their body figures things out. You can support this process by seeding the gut with the right foundation.

How to support it: While you don't need a heavy-duty probiotic yet, providing a source of prebiotics (like the MOS found in yeast complexes) gives the "good guy" bacteria the food they need to colonise the gut and establish a healthy, resilient microbiome for life.

A Foundation for Life

Invest in these three pillars during the first year, and you give your dog the gift of lifelong health.
